Finished illustration of Alex's original character named Biianca or Bii for short.
This character is one of my original characters from a story long in development. I made the sketch for this a while back, but I always wanted to refine it into a clean inked drawing. Making clean inked drawings have not been the easiest thing for me in the past. I recently discovered Adobe Illustrator's Blob Brush in a tutorial I followed, which has been a HUGE advantage in drawing clean ink lines and colors. I used the blob brush and eraser tool and it works amazingly! I layered my colors similarly to how I do in photoshop, with lines, shading and color all on separate layers. Also, effects, backgrounds and such are also on separate layers.
Wing designs show variations of opacity, veins, and texture.
So I'll give you a little more information about this character. Her line of people evolve from bees. Even though she's more humanoid at this point in their evolutionary history, her people has maintained certain advantageous features such as wings and the ability to fly, antenna that can detect different frequencies, segmented eyes (she doesn't have a pupil or iris, rather a large dark patch of hyper-sensitive segments that allow her to see in multiple wavelengths), a soft thin layer of sensitive fur over her body, and the innate and instinctual desire to dance and shake her booty.
I am fascinated with bees even though I run like a little girl when I encounter one. Actually, bees don't bother me that much. It's wasps that make me scream and run like a weepy little school girl. With reason though, those guys are evil.
I digress; I did a lot of research of bees, bee wings, and behavior which eventually gave me the character design you see here. Stay tuned to see more characters!
